Chapter Four

Kristy

“There are no proofs. There just isn't evidence to prove she is innocent,” said the bald-headed, peach of a man sitting across the table from Marsha, while I sat a few feet away from the two of them on a black leather couch in the opulent offices of Williams and Waldorf law firm.

“We shouldn't have taken the case. This won't look good on our record,” said the man.

“I know she is innocent, David. I can see it in her eyes. I can't let an innocent woman be sentenced to the gallows,” Mrs. Williams said, with an exasperated look on her face.

“I can see it in her eyes is not evidence that we can present in court.”

“Give me some more time. I am sure I can figure something out. There is something very simple that we are overlooking here. I just know it.”

I had no idea what the two lawyers were talking about but I was certain it was a case that was turning out to be a big problem for the firm.

Just then, I saw Mrs. Williams get up and shake the bald man’s hand.

I guess it was time to go.

It had been a very exciting day for me. I had come to work with Marsha, and ever since I had entered the offices of the firm, I knew I wanted to do this for the rest of my life.

It was a hub of activity, and all the activity pertained to criminal activity and cases that were being brought to the firm by rich and wealthy clients that wanted the help of the best.

And Mrs. Williams was the best at what she did.

But just when the day was about to come to an end, the bald man named David visited her cabin, and that's when the two began talking about the client who was becoming too difficult to defend.

“What is going on?” I asked Marsha once we were inside her car.

“A senator's wife is being charged for the murder of her husband. The wife claims she is innocent, and I believe her, I don't know why. All of the partners in the firm advised me against taking the case. They were all of the opinions that she could not be defended. That she had committed the crime.”

“But you took the case based on intuition?” I asked, as the car sped towards the house.

“Yes, and I don't want you to follow my examples, well not until you have been in about a hundred trials,” said Mrs. Williams, and I could still see the stress on her face.

“So what are you going to do now?”

“I don't know. But don't worry. I have been in situations like these more times than I can count now. I am sure I will find a way soon,” said Mrs. Williams and I was in awe of this woman.

I could only wish I had the confidence and self-belief that this woman possessed.

“Can I help in any way?”

“You could if I you knew all the details. But I am sorry this is something that even I cannot allow.
